Wonderstate Coffee: Craft, Care, and Coffee with Purpose

by Michele Molina February 05, 2026

Founded in 2005 in the small town of Viroqua, Wisconsin, Wonderstate Coffee has spent the last two decades proving that exceptional coffee can—and should—be rooted in integrity. What began as a local roasting company serving co-op grocery stores has grown into a nationally respected brand, known for its vibrant single-origin coffees and unwavering commitment to farmers, sustainability, and craft.

At the heart of Wonderstate’s story are its founders and leaders. Caleb Nicholes, coming from the wine industry, approached coffee as an artistic pursuit—driven by nuance, terroir, and the relentless refinement of flavor. Shortly after Wonderstate’s founding, TJ Semanchin joined the team following his time on the leadership team at Peace Coffee in Minneapolis, where he developed a deep commitment to equity in coffee sourcing and addressing the industry’s colonial roots. Together, their shared values laid the foundation for a company built on care—for the land, the people who cultivate it, and the communities sustained by it.

A Belief System Brewed into Every Cup

From day one, Wonderstate was guided by a simple but powerful belief: great coffee should taste exceptional and contribute to a more just and sustainable industry. The team works directly with farmers and cooperatives who share their values, paying well above industry standards to help build long-term resilience at origin. Every coffee is handled with intention, honoring both its place and the people behind it.

That philosophy is especially meaningful in today’s coffee landscape. Rising C-market prices, speculation, and the accelerating impacts of climate change have introduced unprecedented volatility. For small producers, these forces often fail to reflect the true cost of growing coffee. For Wonderstate, these challenges only reinforce their commitment to fair pricing, transparency, and long-term partnerships—even when planning becomes more complex.

Packaging That Reflects What’s Inside

When Wonderstate set out to design new packaging for their single-origin and reserve lot coffees, they wanted something that matched the elevated nature of the product itself. The goal was clear: packaging that was distinctive, beautiful, and aligned with their sustainability values—while offering creative freedom to tell each coffee’s story.

Paper tube packaging emerged as the ideal solution.

Working with Paper Tube Co., Wonderstate embraced the creative possibilities of the format, from embossing to metallic details—features that are difficult to achieve with traditional coffee packaging. The final design, led by Bobbi Griffin, Head of Brand, and Neal Olson, Creative Manager, balances playfulness with intention, seamlessly integrating into Wonderstate’s broader visual system.

One standout detail is the subtle kintsugi crack, a recurring brand symbol inspired by the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. Introduced during Wonderstate’s 2020 rebrand, the motif represents care, resilience, and repair—values deeply embedded in the company’s ethos. Inside the tube, a soft gradient draws from Wonderstate’s core seasonal offerings, symbolizing both the wide spectrum of flavors found in coffee and the fleeting, seasonal nature of these exceptional lots.

A Thoughtful Choice, From Start to Finish

After evaluating a wide range of packaging options, Wonderstate ultimately chose Paper Tube Co. for its rare balance of beauty and sustainability. The result is packaging that not only protects and elevates the coffee, but also reflects the brand’s long-standing values—designed to be reused, recycled, and appreciated long after the last cup is poured.

As Wonderstate celebrates 20 years in business, their mission remains unchanged: exceptional coffee and earnest, values-driven sourcing. While innovation continues—new coffees, new ideas, and yes, new packaging—the heart of the brand stays the same.

And if they weren’t in coffee? Well, no one’s quite sure—though Caleb’s love of wine still lingers. For now, Wonderstate is exactly where it belongs: crafting expressive coffees that honor their origins and building a more thoughtful future for the industry.

A Word from Wonderstate

“Honestly, Paper Tube Co. has been wonderful to work with. From production capabilities to the hands-on approach and responsiveness of their team, they’ve been top-notch.”
